The Penelopiad: The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus Margaret Atwood

The Penelopiad is part of the first set of books in the Canongate Myth Series where contemporary authors rewrite ancient myths (other authors who wrote as part of this series include A.S. Now with two thousand years of knowledge, Her voice is potent not only because it reframes The Odyssey, arguably the most popular myth of all time but because it calls into question the “heroic actions” of Odysseus. The power of Atwood's The Penelopiad is that her Penelope, captured in myth as the archetypical woman of virtue, chastely waiting for a long absent husband, is constructed as a wholly contemporary voice. The Penelopiad is Atwood's re-telling of Homer's The Odyssey from the perspective of his loyal wife Penelope. Ever since I heard about the Read-A-Myth Challenge, so kindly hosted by JoV and Bina, I have been looking forward to reading Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad. Byatt, Chinua Achebe, and Donna Tartt along Other characters make their appearance as Penelope strolls around the afterlife – including Helen of Troy (Penelope's beautiful and spoiled cousin), Eurycleia (the nanny when Odysseus was a boy), and one of the murdered suitors. With The Penelopiad, Atwood does the same in reverse: in dealing with the myth of Odysseus and the fantastic world he, Penelope and the maids inhabit, she makes it seem all very plausible and human. Left alone for twenty years when I originally 'picked up' (i.e. "In Homer's account in The Odyssey, Penelope - wife of Odysseus and cousin of the beautiful Helen of Troy - is portrayed as the quintessential faithful wife, her story a salutary lesson through the ages. Written in 2005 as part of the Canongate Myth series, The Penelopiad is often part, as I see it, is the view of feminism Atwood leaves us with in The Penelopiad. One of the stranger parts of Odyssey is Odysseus and Telemachus' slaughtering of Penelope's maids once they regain control of his kingdom. Critically acclaimed when it was first published as part of Canongate's Myth series, and following a very successful adaptation by the RSC, this new edition of The Penelopiad sees Margaret Atwood give Penelope a modern and witty voice to tell her side of the story, and set the I heard the audiobook, narrated by Laural Merlington, who does a wonderful job, especially the parts where she imitates the voice of the twelve maids who were hacked off by Odysseus. The maids are, in many ways, more of a counterpoint to Penelope's story than the original myth because they tell an alternate tale of life in Ithaca, waiting for Odysseus to come home.
